Durga Khote (January 14, 1905− September 22,1991) was an Indian actress, starting as one of the foremostleading ladies of her times, she remained active in Hindi and Marathi cinema,as well as theatre, for over 50 years, starring inaround 200 films and numerous theatre productions.

In 2000, in a millennium issue, India Today, a leading magazine, chose heramong 100 people Who Shaped India, as it noted that,'Durga Khote marks the pioneering phase for woman in Indian Cinema.' [1], as shewas one of the first women from respectable families to enter thefilm industry thus breaking a social taboo [2]

She also ranks amongst top ten actresses in mother roles in Hindicinema[3],essayed by her in Hindi cinema, most notable among them were, as Jodhabaiin K. Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam(1960), as Kaikey in Vijay Bhatt’s classic, BharatMilap (1942), her other memorable roles as mother were inCharnon Ki Dasi (1941), Mirza Ghalib , Bobby(1973) and Bidaai(1974). She was awarded, the highestaward in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, forlifetime contribution to Indian cinema, in 1983.

Earlylife

She was born in a traditional Mumbaikar GoudSaraswat Brahmin family (Surname Laud) in present-day Maharashtra. By the ageof 26, Durga Khote was a widowed mother with two young sons, Bakuland Harin. She had to seek work in films in order to support herchildren. In doing so, she became a pioneer of sorts, as she hailedform a traditional family, and since the film industry at that timewas regarded as the preserve of the base and the bawdy. Also, mostof the female characters were played by men.

Durga Khote debuted in a minor role in an obscure 1931 silentfilm, Farebi Jaal, by the Prabhat Film Company, followed byMaya Machhindra (1932), but was soon promoted to playheroine in the 1932 bi-lingual (Hindi & Marathi) film'Ayodhyecha Raja', another Prabhat film, which was thefirst-ever Marathi talkie and proved to be a runawayhit, where she essayed the role of Rani Taramati [4]. Therewas no looking back for the diffident widow from Kolhapur after that. Indeed,she ventured yet another pioneering trend: despite working closelywith Prabhat Film Company, she brokeaway from the 'studio system' (exclusive contract with a studio towork in its films on a monthly salary) then in vogue and became oneof the first 'freelance' artistes of that era by workingoccasionally with the New Theatres, and East India Film Co. (bothat Calcutta), and Prakash Pictures.

In 1937, she produced and directed a film titledSaathi, making her one of the first women to step intothis role in Indian cinema[5]. The40s open for her in a big way, with award winning performances inCharnon Ki Dasi (1941) and Vijay Bhatt's classic, BharatMilap (1942), both of which got her the BFJA Best Actress Awardconsecutively for two years.

Durga Khote also remained active in theatre circuit for many years, especially theMarathi theatre in Bombay. She was actively associated with the Indian People's TheatreAssociation (IPTA), and worked in several plays for the MumbaiMarathi Sahitya Sangh. In 1954, she famously performed the role ofLady Macbeth, inV.V. Shirwadkar's Marathi adaptations of Macbeth, as Rajmukut,'The Royal Crown', along with Nanasaheb Phatak [6]

Latercareer

Durga Khote essayed a wide variety of roles over a career thatwas not only long but also untouched by scandal. She was theinspiration for several generations of Indian actresses, includingveterans like the late Shobhna Samarth, who frequently spokeof how she had been inspired by Durga Khote's example.

During later years, she played several important characterroles, such as the mother of the protagonist. Her portrayal of Jodhabai,the queen of Akbar torn between duty towards her husbandand love towards her son in the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960) was well received.She went on to play other widely appreciated character roles inlater movies such as the role of the grandmother of the heroine inBobby(1973) and the hero's aunt in Abhimaan (1973) and one morereally memorable film Bidaai (1974), where she played a mother, avery sensitive role that can make you cry, and received the Filmfare BestSupporting Actress Award.

In 1963, she acted in Merchant Ivory's debut film,TheHouseholder (1963) [7][8], andher final memorable role was in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's ``Bawarchi(1972). Sheacted in over 200 films in her career, and by 1980s shesuccessfully diversified into production of short films, Ad filmsand documentaries by setting up Fact Films, and later, Durga KhoteProductions, which produced Doordarshan TV series Wagle KiDuniya. Later in life she wrote her acclaimed autobiography,in Marathi which was later translated intoEnglish as 'I Durga Khote' [9], andmoved to Alibaug, beach front near Mumbai, and died on September 22, 1991.

Personallife

From her first marriage in an orthodox family, she had two sons,Bakul and Harin, who was the first husband of theatre doyenne andfilm director, Vijay Mehta died early in life.

After she was widowed early in her marriage, Khote, had anunsuccessful second marriage to Mohammed Rashid. [10] Todayone of her grandson, Ravi is filmmaker, so is one ofgranddaughters, Anjali Khote; her another grandson, Deven Khotestarting with Television production [11],later became a noted film producer, making films like, Jodhaa Akbarand Life in a Metro [12].

Her brother, Nandu Khote was an actor in silent movies, andnoted stage actor in Mumbai, whose daughter Shobha Khote also actedin Hindi films, since her debut in Seema (1955), she later directedand produced Marathi film, in the 90s entered the television. Herdaughter, Bhavna Balsaver, is also an award-winning TV actress.[13]

Meri Durga is an Indian television series on Star Plus created by the director turned producer Ravindra Gautam along with producer Pradeep Kumar under their own banner Paperback Films starring Srishti Jain. The show premiered on 26 January 2017 and went off air on 17 March 2018.[1][2][3][4]

Plot[edit]

The story traces the journey of a girl (Durga) who aspires to become a runner, it revolves around the most beautiful and sensitive relationship of a father and his daughter. Highlighting the realities of life, Yashpal Choudhary (father) works as a peon in one of the schools in Haryana, his only dream is to fight against all the odds and educate his daughter Durga for a better future. But despite trying hard to study and prove herself, Durga couldn't reach Yashpal's expectations.Yashpal who works as a mere school peon has a very progressive viewpoint when it comes to educating a girl or a boy – unlike his other relatives. Durga, on the other hand, is a very lively and a positive 12-year-old who is enjoying her childhood in and around the corners of Haryana, she loves running behind kites, climbing on the mango tree. Besides enjoying her childhood, Durga tried very hard to fulfill her father's dream, but somehow she just couldn't understand the calculations and hence always found herself confused between alphabets and numbers. Influenced by her coach, Rana sir, Yaspal allows Durga to be an athlete. Durga emerges as the winner in the national race but her competitor, Arti who secures the 2nd position gets drugs mixed in her food. In the blood test, Durga is found to be on drugs and is expelled from running for 5 years; as the consequence, her innocent family faces the villagers' ire and Durga is so shocked that she quits running forever.

Five years later

After 5 years Durga is now grown up and she has the responsibility to take care of her family as well as her dreams too, she meets Sanjay Prince (SP), her old childhood friend. But things between them are not too good; when Sp finds out that Durga has joined the same college as him, he threatens her to leave the college but eventually, they fall in love. Later Durga gets to know that SP's mom, Gayatri Devi, had mixed drugs to her food five years back and tells the media. Gayatri Devi gets angry and influences SP to make him Durga's enemy and SP and Arti start a new play. In the midst of this, SP and Durga marry each other. After being tortured by SP and his family, Durga finds out that Gayatri was a national athlete who was expelled from the academy and helps her to keep it a secret. Eventually, SP gets to know that Durga is innocent and his mom was the behind her pains; the family comes together and Durga begins training for her nationals. Arti's father blackmails Durga that he will destroy her family if she takes part in the national race, he kidnaps her family on the day of the race but SP and Durga rescue the family and Durga wins the race. Durga gets admitted in the academy for being qualified for international games, she succeeds in her attempts.
